Tacoma Pushes to Reimagine Crash-Prone Portland Avenue

Tacoma is working with the Puyallup Tribe to redesign Portland Avenue, a crash-prone corridor on the city’s Eastside, as part of its Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2035. The city secured a $2.1 million federal grant in 2023 for community engagement and planning; proposed improvements include bike lanes, better pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, and tree planting, with design options coming to community feedback in early 2027.
