What The Data Will Tell Us: Ribbon Cutting for Air Pollution Monitor in Des Moines

Des Moines opened a new air pollution monitoring station on September 24, 2026, at Officer Steven J Underwood Park, tracking six major pollutants including carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and fine particulate matter. The project, supported by State Sen. Tina Orwall, UW researchers, and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, will provide hourly public data to help understand health impacts from airplane emissions near SeaTac Airport. The effort represents decades of community advocacy and state-funded research collaboration.
