WHEN COAL WAS KING: Kummer School 1939

Voice of the Valley published a historical column about the Kummer Schoolhouse, a 1898 structure originally built for a small coal and clay mining town south of Black Diamond. The schoolhouse, acquired by the Callero family in 1929 and later moved to S.E. Green Valley Road, still stands today as a privately owned building, now marked with a sign reading “This is Kummer, formerly School District 123, home of the lonely red schoolhouse.”
