Fare gates coming to Capitol Hill Station in $87M Sound Transit pilot

Sound Transit’s board approved an $87 million pilot program to install fare gates at 14 stations across its 1 and 2 Lines, with Capitol Hill Station among the nine core tunnel stations receiving gates by 2029–2030. The shift from open proof-of-payment aims to boost fare compliance and generate $33–83 million annually, breaking even within two to three years. Burien residents using light rail to Seattle will eventually encounter the new system.
