Sound Transit Board Greenlights Targeted Fare Gate Retrofits

Sound Transit’s Board approved a $6 million fare gate retrofit program on Thursday that will design and eventually install gates at 14 high-ridership Link stations by 2029–2030, with total costs reaching $87 million. The agency projects the gates will increase fare compliance from 63% to 95% and boost annual fare revenue by $30 million, recouping costs within two to three years. Board members raised equity concerns about low-income riders; Sound Transit committed to expanding enrollment in reduced-fare Orca LIFT cards and ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities and bicycles.
