Wilson’s executive order, Seattle SAFER Streets Act hoped to speed up Vision Zero, slow down drivers

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson issued an executive order and the City Council advanced the Seattle SAFER Streets Act to accelerate traffic safety projects ahead of the school year. The legislation, introduced by Councilmember Rob Saka, adopts the Vision Zero Action Plan as official city policy and expands the Seattle Department of Transportation’s authority to deploy safety measures like leading pedestrian intervals and speed management devices. Seattle recorded 27 traffic fatalities in 2025, with the act also requiring side guards on contractor trucks following deadly collisions.
