Shilshole Bay Marina floating wetland project aims to restore salmon habitat

Researchers at the University of Washington are studying a floating wetland project at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle to restore salmon habitat in saltwater. Installed since 2022, the system of 10 connected floating units with native vegetation and eelgrass is showing early promise, with more juvenile salmon observed near the wetlands than at control sites. While the project is in Seattle, it represents regional innovation in habitat restoration that may benefit South King County salmon populations.
