Seabird colony on Vendovi Island relies on one aging wall. Repairs are on the way

The San Juan Preservation Trust is repairing a deteriorating breakwater on Vendovi Island, located ten miles into Bellingham Bay, to protect public access and restore habitat for pigeon guillemots. The one-month restoration begins in September and will reinforce the wall with larger boulders and filter cloth to prevent future erosion. The guillemot population has declined from 50 birds in 2010 to just four, and researchers from the University of Washington are monitoring how the birds respond to the repairs using autonomous recording units and direct counts.
