A new, monochromatic perspective on Alexander Calder at SAM

The Seattle Art Museum is hosting “Monochrome: Calder and Tara Donovan” through January 17, 2027, featuring black sculptures and prints by Brooklyn-based artist Tara Donovan alongside matte-black Alexander Calder pieces. The exhibition, curated by Donovan with SAM curator Catharina Manchanda, uses monochromatic black as its central theme to highlight materials, texture, and form. This is the third show in SAM’s Calder series, which began in 2023 thanks to a donation by the Shirley Family.
