‘Recipe for chaos’: WA’s Aug. 4 primary could be delayed as federal judge reconsiders redrawn legislative maps

A federal judge is reconsidering whether to throw out Washington’s redrawn legislative maps, a decision that could delay the Aug. 4 primary and leave 67 candidates in limbo. The maps, which shifted over 300,000 people across 13 districts in 2024 to strengthen Latino voting power in the Yakima Valley, are now being challenged after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling curtailed race-based redistricting. King, Pierce, and Thurston county voters could be affected if the maps are reversed, according to Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, who warned it would be a “recipe for chaos.”
